カステラ (castella cake) is one of the must-eat, and probably the most famous dessert food in Nagasaki, Japan. You may have had it before, but it cannot be compared to the ones in Nagasaki! (My personal favorite is that of 福砂屋 Fukusaya!) The rich honey taste and sweetness from the sugar coated bottom are well-balanced, and it doesn’t feel too sweet like other Japanese desserts may.
What’s special about ニューヨーク堂 is that they have カステラアイス, ice cream sandwiched in castella! Doesn’t that just sound amazing!? I could not resist from trying one, and it was amazing. Not surprised at all 🙂
There are four flavors: バニラ(vanilla)、抹茶(matcha, Japanese green tea)、びわ(loquat)、ストローベリ(strawberry). I’ve only tried the matcha one, because I love matcha to the moon and back and wasn’t cool enough to try the other ones…I probably should’ve though >_<
Original flavor (honey) castella cake with matcha ice sandwiched in between. Sweet but neutralized with tea flavor! A creative twist of the famous castella cake!
It is stored in the fridge, so you’ll have to wait a couple minutes for it to thaw before enjoying the deliciousness. It’s totally worth the wait though! 🙂 A good choice for a summer treat (or any other season, let’s be real).
